Door County is famous for it's gorgeous sunsets! |
There are so many places we want to see but we can only choose one for our big trip. Initially we planned on giving the North Channel a second chance since our first trip there was derailed by a break down for 4 days, and a rough night spend on the rocks after dragging anchor. After much thought we decided it was time to return to Door County Wisconsin. Ben's family visited Door County every summer for their family vacation and we spent a week there when we were dating. We can't wait to experience it by boat.
Although we did visit Sturgeon Bay while avoiding a storm in our 2010 trip the weather was so bad we weren't able to explore the area. This time we will be trailering instead of cruising the 225 miles north from our home port. This will give us the extra days we will need to cross the famous Port Des Morts channel, otherwise know as Death's Door, as we head north to the Garden Peninsula of Michigan for a few nights of anchoring under the stars. This small passage is a watery grave for the many ships who have run aground here trying to pass between Green Bay and Lake Michigan.

Some other stops will include Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Sister Bay! Although we will mostly be staying in marinas we are hoping to spend a night or two in picturesque Nicolet Bay or Horseshoe Island a long the way. As always we will post many pictures and share our trip with you! We hope if this is our last big adventure that's it's a good one :-) (dana's note - what?!? this is NOT our last big adventure!)
Glad to see someone else scheming and planning Lake Michigan cruising plans early in February. If you do decide to sell the Pickle, you should consider a visit to the dark side...a sailboat!
ReplyDeleteAs I'm sure you know dreaming of summer and planning a trip like this really helps us get thru the long and depressing winter layup. Funny you should mention switching to the dark side. We have spent the winter reading The Voyager's Handbook by Beth Leonard, visiting Strickly Sail in Chicago, reading countless sailing blogs, and of course reading our favorite magazine...Cruising World! Just like you we also hope to sail off on "the big one" someday but first we have to make the big jump over to sail. We'll let you know if we are any closer to that jump after our sailing lessons in June!
DeleteYou couldn't have picked a better place than Door County Wisconsin! The "Cape Cod" of the Midwest has so much to offer.
ReplyDeleteWe live in Milwaukee so we are very fortunate the Door is only a few hours away. We get up there as often as we can. Our goal is to eventually have a boat up there and just go from town to town.
Door County is not just a spectacular place, it is a state of mind. There is something special about a place that allows you to see a sunrise over the water on the same day that you can see a sunset over the water. There are so many wineries, light houses, golf courses, art galleries, theaters, islands, parks with amazing views and lake side towns to explore. Make sure you pull into Fuzzy's in Sister Bay and get an ice cream at Wilson's in Ephraim!
My wife and I are hoping to get a boat in a few years. Milwaukee is a great port with many restaurants that you can pull your boat up to. We can't wait to participate in the boating lifestyle. The Pickle is exactly the size boat that we want to get started with. If you decide to sell it in few years, you may have a buyer here in Wisconsin! :) Have fun planning your trip and enjoy the upcoming boating season.
